What Does Connection Timed Out Mean?

Understand connection timeout errors such as Windows error 10060 and how to troubleshoot them.

Quick Tip: Start with the first checklist item and change one thing at a time. This makes it much easier to identify what actually fixed the problem.

The Basic Meaning

A connection timeout means the application did not receive the expected response within the allowed time. In a SHOUTcast broadcasting setup, the cause can be the network path, an unreachable server, a blocked port, or incorrect connection information.

1. Verify the Server Address and Port

Double-check the hostname or IP address and port. If either is wrong, the encoder may wait for a response from a destination that is not the intended streaming service.

2. Check Your Internet Connection

Confirm that the computer can reach other internet services. If the local connection is unstable, fix that first.

3. Consider Firewall or Security Software

A local firewall, security product, VPN, or network policy can interfere with outbound connections. Test carefully and follow your local security policy rather than permanently disabling protection.

4. Test the Port

A port test from the broadcasting computer can help determine whether the destination is reachable. The result is a diagnostic clue, not proof of every possible server condition.

5. Compare With Other Error Codes

If SAM reports Error 10060, use this article together with the dedicated Error 10060 article in the Knowledge Base. If the error changes to 10061, the troubleshooting direction changes because the connection is being refused rather than timing out.

When to Contact Support

If the server information is correct and the same connection repeatedly times out while other internet services work normally, provide the exact error, server port, and approximate time of the failure to support.

Still Having Problems?

If the problem continues after checking the items above, digiSTREAM support can help determine whether the issue is related to the encoder, AutoDJ, streaming server, or network.

Helpful information to provide support:
  • The exact error message, if one is displayed.
  • Your streaming server port.
  • Whether AutoDJ or a live DJ is currently connected.
  • What changed immediately before the problem began.
  • The approximate time the problem occurred.
