Why Are My Listeners Hearing Buffering or Dropouts?

Troubleshoot a SHOUTcast stream that connects successfully but repeatedly pauses, buffers, or drops audio for listeners.

First Determine Where the Problem Is

If every listener experiences the same problem, investigate the station, encoder, AutoDJ output, or server connection. If only one listener is affected, the listener’s own Internet connection, Wi-Fi, device, or player may be the cause.

Check the Source Audio

An encoder that cannot send data consistently can produce interruptions. Check for encoder warnings, disconnects, or messages indicating that data cannot be sent fast enough.

Check Bitrate and Upload Capacity

Your broadcasting computer needs enough upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate. Wi-Fi congestion, other uploads, or a saturated connection can cause the encoder to fall behind.

Check for Repeated Disconnects

If the encoder repeatedly disconnects and reconnects, resolve that problem first. See SAM Broadcaster Disconnects Frequently or the appropriate software troubleshooting guide.

Remember That Listener Networks Differ

A station can be healthy while a particular listener has poor Wi-Fi, cellular service, ISP congestion, or an overloaded device. Compare results from more than one listener before concluding that the server is at fault.
