What Is a SHOUTcast Port?

A simple explanation of SHOUTcast ports, what they do, and why the correct port matters to DJs and listeners.

Quick Tip: Start with the first checklist item and change one thing at a time. This makes it much easier to identify what actually fixed the problem.

The Simple Explanation

A port is a numbered network endpoint used to reach a service on a server. Your SHOUTcast stream is associated with a specific port, and both broadcasting software and listeners must use the correct connection information.

Why the Port Matters

If SAM Broadcaster uses the wrong port, it may connect to nothing, connect to another service, or return an error such as Connection Refused. Listeners using the wrong port may also be unable to hear the station.

Where to Find Your Port

Use the port assigned to your digiSTREAM station in your control panel or service information. Do not guess the port number.

Port vs Website Address

A website address and a SHOUTcast stream address are not necessarily the same. Your station's public stream URL may include a hostname and port specifically for audio delivery.

Troubleshooting a Port Problem

If you suspect a port problem, verify the hostname and port first. Then test the connection and compare the result with the exact SAM error message.

Still Having Problems?

If the problem continues after checking the items above, digiSTREAM support can help determine whether the issue is related to the encoder, AutoDJ, streaming server, or network.

Helpful information to provide support:
  • The exact error message, if one is displayed.
  • Your streaming server port.
  • Whether AutoDJ or a live DJ is currently connected.
  • What changed immediately before the problem began.
  • The approximate time the problem occurred.
