SHOUTcast vs. Icecast — Which One Should I Use?

If you are configuring broadcasting software and see choices for both SHOUTcast and Icecast, it is important to select the server type that matches the streaming server you are connecting to.

For digiSTREAM customers: digiSTREAM provides SHOUTcast hosting. When your broadcasting software asks which streaming server type or protocol you are using, your configuration should match the SHOUTcast service information supplied for your account.

SHOUTcast and Icecast Are Different Server Types

SHOUTcast and Icecast are both Internet radio streaming-server platforms, but they are not interchangeable configurations.

A broadcasting program may support both platforms, which is why you may see SHOUTcast and Icecast listed as separate choices. Selecting the wrong server type can prevent the encoder from connecting or authenticating correctly.

What digiSTREAM Uses

digiSTREAM's service is based on SHOUTcast. Use the server address, port, password, and encoder settings provided for your digiSTREAM account.

Do not select Icecast simply because it appears in your software. Icecast is a different streaming-server platform. If you are connecting to a digiSTREAM SHOUTcast server, use the SHOUTcast configuration appropriate for that server.

What About SAM Broadcaster, VirtualDJ, or Mixxx?

SAM Broadcaster, VirtualDJ, and Mixxx can present multiple streaming-server or encoder options. The important thing is that the software configuration matches the server you are actually connecting to.

  • SAM Broadcaster: verify the streaming server/encoder type and the server address and port.
  • VirtualDJ: verify the broadcast server type and connection information before troubleshooting the network.
  • Mixxx: verify the connection type and the server information supplied for your stream.

If the server type is wrong, changing passwords or network settings may not solve the problem.

If It Won't Connect

Start with the basics:

  1. Confirm that you are using the correct digiSTREAM server address.
  2. Confirm that you are using the correct streaming port.
  3. Confirm the password required by your streaming configuration.
  4. Confirm that the selected server/encoder type matches the SHOUTcast service.
  5. Confirm that your bitrate and audio format are supported by the configuration.
  6. If the settings are correct, use the Knowledge Base to troubleshoot the specific connection error reported by your software.

A connection error does not automatically mean the streaming server is offline. Network connectivity, DNS, firewall settings, software configuration, and authentication can all affect a connection.

Still Having Problems?

If you have confirmed the server type and basic connection settings but still cannot connect, digiSTREAM can help determine whether the problem appears to be with your broadcasting software, your Internet connection, or the streaming service.
